N.E.R.D. and Dead Weather Solve 'Mystery' Gaps in Glastonbury Lineup

It just isn't Glastonbury without mysterious gaps in the schedule; the unfilled slots that breed rumour after rumour after rumour.

Supergrass offshoot the Hot Rats (singer Gaz Coombes and drummer Danny Goffey) played to a rammed Park Stage -- partly because of rumours Arctic Monkeys and Glastonbury favourites Muse were supposed to be playing. Still, spirited covers of Elvis Costello's 'Pump It Up' and the Beat's 'Mirror in the Bathroom' fit the day's mood.

N.E.R.D., Pharrell William's festival-friendly beats machine, are also a last-minute addition to the Pyramid Stage, informing the late-afternoon crowd that there are 200,000 people out there. If there were, the fences had fallen down, Pharrell.

Elvis Costello Performs New Song at Record Store Gig

If the idea of Elvis Costello walking into a record store sounds a little bit like a dodo flying into a dinosaur, well, it's easy to see why. But that clearly was not the case at noon today when Costello performed a 40-minute set San Francisco's Amoeba Records to a packed house of 1,000 potential record buyers.

Costello and several accompanists (including the formidable singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale) ran through a variety of tunes from his cache -- even reaching as far back as 1977's 'Blame it on Cain' -- although, of course, he focused on his new album 'Secret, Profane & Sugarcane,' which he was there to promote.

Elvis Costello Toasts NYC at Secret Pub Show

Elvis Costello surprised a handful of bar patrons and fans with an acoustic set for WRXP on Tuesday night, when he unveiled some tunes from his new, T Bone Burnett-produced album, 'Secret, Profane and Sugarcane.' The setting at Jim Brady's, an Irish pub in NYC's Financial District, was ripe with enthusiasm as Costello raised a pint to the crowd.

"There's a couple of songs about love and lust," Costello opened. "It used to be that you bought a new record and it wasn't new music, it was just good music. Now you're lucky if you get two good songs on an album."

Elvis Costello Expects Help From His Friends at Bonnaroo

When Elvis Costello takes to Bonnaroo's "That Tent" for a special solo performance on Saturday, June 13, he's gonna have stiff competition on all sides: Wilco, the Mars Volta and the Decemberists all have simultaneous sets on adjacent stages. At a recent press conference for the festival, Costello said that there are a number of acts he wants to see this year.

"Unfortunately, a couple of them are playing at the exact same time as I am," he admitted. "I'm already plotting my way from stage to stage."

As for performing solo, Costello says he'll take the opportunity to visit material from his entire repertoire and that, because Bonnaroo has such a talent pool there already, special guests and collaborations are virtually a given.

Rock Almanac: December 17, 2008

On This Date in 1978: During his appearance on 'Saturday Night Live,' Elvis Costello stops after the first line of 'Less Than Zero' and instead launches the Attractions into 'Radio Radio.' This spontaneous move gets him banned from the show.

The Almanac Advises for December 17: "As many brilliant discoveries were made by acting impulsively as by deliberate planning."

Costello Claims He's the Original 'Napoleon Dynamite'

Elvis Costello isn't happy with filmmaker Jared Hess, who, Costello says, refused to credit him for the name to his smash 2004 film, 'Napoleon Dynamite.' Costello fans have long recognized the moniker as Costello's mid-'80s alter-ego.

Hess maintains that the name of his outcast movie character was something he dreamed up, but Costello firmly disputes that notion. "The guy just denies completely that I made the name up," Costello tells Spin in its December issue. "But I invented it."

Elvis Costello Brings 'Luck' to Fall Out Boy

Elvis Costello will be appearing on Fall Out Boy's upcoming album, 'Folie a Deux'. While it's unknown if many of FOB's pubescent fans have even heard 'Oliver's Army' or 'Watching the Detectives,' the Pete Wentz-steered, Patrick Stump-fronted quartet is stoked about the cameo just the same, calling "it a once in a lifetime experience."

"I guess its time to let the cat out of the bag," the band tells Absolutepunk. "We didn't want to talk about this before we actually heard it. We've announced a couple of guests on the record but 'I Wish You Luck With a Capital F' is just one of the thousands of genius ideas thought up by Elvis Costello and he's gonna be singing on 'Folie a Deux.' This isn't a typical appearance as he's alongside the guys in a couple of the Decaydance [Wentz's label] bands on the song. Either way this has been an amazing experience for Fall Out Boy as he is one of our heroes, especially so for Patrick. We can't wait for you to have the chance to hear it."
