Travis 'Sing' Glen Campbell's Praises

When Travis frontman/guitarist Fran Healy first watched country legend Glen Campbell perform the band's hit 'Sing,' it was surreal to say the least.

"Somebody told me about [Campbell's cover], so I put it on YouTube and saw him on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live,' performing our song," Healy tells Spinner about the tune, which appears on Campbell's covers album, 'Meet Glen Campbell.' "It's weird. It's like when you see your friends hanging out with other people and they can't see you, and they're acting slightly differently. It's like, 'That's not my friends. That's not my song.' He does a nice cover of it."

Glen Campbell Covers Green Day, U2 in Our Studio

The title of his new album is 'Meet Glen Campbell,' but the country legend jokes that he should perhaps add the word "Again" to the end of that. Campbell, the unmistakable voice behind such classics as 'Rhinestone Cowboy' and 'Wichita Lineman,' is diving into new territory on this project, covering an eclectic mix of fellow music icons, from the likes of John Lennon and Jackson Browne to U2 and Green Day.

The 72-year-old Campbell isn't worried that his longtime fans will be turned off by the different kinds of modern-day songs he's singing. Explaining that he simply looked for "songs with good lyrics" for this album, he is convinced of its universal appeal.

Glen Campbell Covers U2, Green Day on New Album

File this one under "Things That Make You Go, 'Hmm?'"

Glen Campbell, the man responsible for enduring classics like 'Witchita Lineman' and 'Rhinestone Cowboy' will take on modern rock staples by the Foo Fighters, U2 and Green Day this summer. The country singer, 72, will follow in the footsteps of artists like Johnny Cash -- and attempt to reach a younger audience -- when he drops 'Meet Glen Campbell' on August 19.

"I really like all of the songs and I had a great time recording them," says Campbell, who also covers tunes by the Velvet Underground, John Lennon, Travis and the Replacements, plus two numbers originally performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for the upcoming disc. "While I didn't write these songs, this sounds like a Glen Campbell album, which is important to me."

Meanest Love Songs: No. 2

'By the Time I Get to Phoenix'
--Glen Campbell (1967)

The Kiss-Off: "She'll cry just to think I'd really leave her"

He knows she'll laugh when she first reads the goodbye note, since he's tried to leave her so many times before. He'll be in Albuquerque when she dials his number around lunchtime; all the way to Oklahoma by nightfall, when she'll realize this time it's for good. One of the most-covered songs of its time, it just goes to show the universal agony of the protracted breakup.
