Rosanne Cash Honors Late Father With Springsteen, Dylan

Rosanne Cash will honor her late father, Johnny Cash, with her upcoming album 'The List,' in October. The singer explains that the 12 songs are all tunes off a list of "100 Essential Country Songs" that her dad gave her back in 1973.

Rosanne puts her own unique signature on each of the 12 songs included on the new project. Among the tunes she picked are Jimmie Rodgers' 'Miss the Mississippi and You,' Hank Snow's 'I'm Movin' On,' Bobby Bare's '500 Miles' and Bob Dylan's 'Girl From the North Country.' Also included are duets with Bruce Springsten ('Heartbreak Hotel'), Elvis Costello ('Heartaches by the Number') Jeff Tweedy ('Long Black Veil') and Rufus Wainwright ('Silver Wings').

Johnny Cash Inspires Daughter Rosanne's 'List'

Of the life lessons she learned from her father, Rosanne Cash can credit one particular course of study with helping to shape her next recording project. Cash's new album, 'The List,' was inspired by just that -- a list her dad, Johnny Cash, gave her when she was 18 years old.

"He called it the '100 Essential Country Songs,' and said if I learned this list, I would be truly educated," the 53-year-old Cash tells Billboard. "We are culling about 15 songs from the list and re-interpreting them, with the respect of an archivist, the love of a daughter and my own sensibility as a New Yorker for the last two decades."

Song-Inspired Band Names: Old 97's

Old 97's
Inspired by Johnny Cash's 'Wreck of the Old '97'

Ken Bethea and Murry Hammond were desperate to come up with a group name "lest we be forever dubbed 'The Rhett Miller Band," Bethea once joked about their frontman. One idea was Up the Junction (from the Squeeze title) before being inspired by Johnny Cash's version of this country standard. Said Bethea, "Murry sold us on Old 97's by saying, 'Numbers are cool.'"

For Sale: Johnny Cash's Dented Hubcap

Item: JOHNNY CASH'S HUB-CAB FROM HIS CADDY

Buy it Now: $625

Seller's Description: "On September 29, 2008, I interviewed Richard McGibony a very close friend of Johnny Cash about the items that will be offering on auction in the next several weeks. During the early years John and Richard were 'buddies and hung out together.' We will be auctioning several items that Richard has that were personally given to him by Johnny Cash. Each piece that will go on auction will have a copy of the recorded interview explaining how the object was obtained and become part of the item that will go to the winning bidder. The unedited interviews are very interesting and actually quite entertaining since they explains how this item relates to and was obtain by Richard and perhaps a story or two that not at all times are related to that particular item but very interesting. Again, these tapes that you will hear are unedited, but full of information and also offer great listening. Johnny Cash memorabilia that we will be offering include signed checks, letters, studio demo tapes, clothing, signed books, a hubcap from John's Cadillac (a great story about this), an original copy of a letter that explains when Richard bailed out John from jail by putting his home as bond. Richard is also mentioned in a few books about Johnny. Included in this auction are the Hubcap -- recorded conversation, and pictures."

Beatles, Cash Documentaries Highlight Woodstock Film Fest

Though hours from the site of the historic music festival, Woodstock, NY has long been considered synonymous with music. To that end, it's fitting that the Woodstock Film Festival would honor its location's reputation. The 9th annual fest, which took place Oct. 1-5, included several music documentaries in its 'Focus on Music' series. Spinner took in all of the flicks and pared it down to the top three music lovers must see.

1. 'All Together Now': Stunningly shot and pleasantly insightful, 'All Together Now' follows the collaboration between the Beatles and Cirque du Soleil to produce 'Love' -- a project George Harrison barely began before he died. This "privileged view," as the director calls it, reveals more than the intense rehearsal and staging process. The film witnesses the artful reconfiguration of Beatles classics by producer George Martin and his son Giles; Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison loyally defending their deceased husbands' visions and integrity; and a moment of elation as Ringo Starr giddily jumps up and down in his seat, while Paul McCartney plays air drums and lip syncs 'Sgt. Peppers.' The filmmakers expect a DVD release in time for Christmas.

Springsteen Evokes Ghosts of Cash and Clash in Nashville

Bruce Springsteen's first arena show in eight years in Music City on Thursday night drew such Nashville royalty as Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn, Amy Grant, Martina McBride, dobro player extraordinaire Jerry Douglas and Kim Carnes of 'Bette Davis Eyes' fame. But it was the ghosts whose true presence was felt.

Performing at the Sommet Center, Springsteen conjured up Spirits in the Night as he first evoked that of Elvis with the jump blues classic 'Good Rocking Tonight,' a tour premiere and a song Springsteen recalled the band had played at the now legendary Passaic, N.J.-Capital Theater shows in 1978. The song, which he played as a request from an audience member's sign, required a "short conference" called by Springsteen for the band to go over the chords before they launched into a sloppy, but high-spirited version. A few tunes later, accompanied only by guitarist Nils Lofgren, Springsteen rendered a beautifully soulful short take on Johnny Cash's 'I Walk the Line,' introducing it by saying, "This man cut a few of my songs. His voice is deeply missed."

Broken Social Scene, Deerhoof Lead CMJ Fest + More

Broken Social Scene, Deerhoof, Cool Kids, Annuals, Margot and the Nuclear So and So's and Juliana Hatfield are among the first wave of bands announced to play this year's CMJ festival, which runs October 21-25.

A new Oasis song, titled 'Falling Down,' off the band's forthcoming album 'Dig Out Your Soul,' leaked online.

The Kooks are playing an acoustic set for contest winners in New York City atop a double-decker bus, which they will be using to treat fans to a guided tour of the city's rock 'n' roll sights.

Ben Folds leaked a fake version of his new album, 'Way to Normal.' Folds spent eight hours recording six tracks in one late-night session and then let his friends put it on the Internet.

'Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: Legacy Edition,' a three-disc CD/DVD box set, will feature Cash's famous Folsom Prison performance, as well as loads of previously unreleased tracks, including duets with June Carter Cash.
