Jay Brannan Kicks Off Tour With Spinner Staff

After Jay Brannan's cover of 'Man in the Mirror' was featured on Spinner and received a huge response across the Internet, it was only fitting that the singer-songwriter should stop at the Spinner office and meet the staff, who were impressed by his timely tribute to the late Michael Jackson.

"I started recording that video before they even announced he was dead. I turned on the news and they said he was in the hospital," Brannan told Spinner when he came by. "I just didn't realize it would make the rounds like that."

Brannan, who took out his guitar and broke into song for us, played two of his own tunes -- 'Can't Have It All' and 'Beautifully' -- as well as a Bob Dylan classic, 'Blowin' in the Wind.'

Metallica Pay Homage to Michael Jackson With 'Beat It' Cover

Metallica paid tribute to the late King of Pop last weekend during its encore at 's Sonisphere Festival. Honoring Michael Jackson during its July 4th headlining appearance at the event, the metal giants played a portion of 'Beat It' before easing into a riotous cover of Queen's 'Stone Cold Crazy.'

Of course, the original version of Jackson 's 1982 classic proudly featured the guitar work of Eddie Van Halen. The hard rock virtuoso's forceful, finger-tapped solo helped to bring MJ's iconic 'Thriller' album to the attention of legions of metal kids around the world.

Michael Jackson Memorial Moves Fans

Everything leading up to the Michael Jackson memorial service at Los Angeles' Staples Center had an air of surreality most people had never experienced. Lottery winners and press members picked up their wristbands and tickets at Dodger Stadium beforehand, and embarked to a movie-like scene in downtown L.A. Tuesday morning, with literally as many as 20 officers at a time standing on street corners, and emergency vehicles lined up and down the block in preparation for the worst.

Inside, it was even more surreal to start as 11,000 people sat in silence. But by the time Michael Jackson's daughter, Paris Katherine Jackson, spoke two-and-a-half hours later, countless attendees were in tears.

"It may have seemed like a show on TV, but inside it felt like a memorial," Jackson fan Craig Pratt told Spinner after walking outside of Staples Center. Diana, a 24-year-old who watched it on TV at a nearby pizza place, said that despite watching it on a screen, it felt just as it did for those inside. "I'd never been to a funeral and I felt like this was my first funeral," she said. "It felt very personal and emotional."

Road Report: Maximo Park Mourn Michael Jackson

U.K. rockers Maximo Park are hitting festivals around the world this summer and are keeping a diary for Spinner. In the first entry, frontman Paul Smith overcomes the craziness of his band's sets at Glastonbury, mourns the death of Michael Jackson and worships at the feet of Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen.

Britain is gripped by its first heatwave of the season. As I type, clear beams of sunlight hit the face of my wristwatch, giving the effect of an tiny, erratic mirror ball pinging around the room. I think the first signs of this weather came on Thursday. That day, our band had the pleasure of opening the Glastonbury festival in a small tent called the Queen's Head before going on to play the Other Stage on Saturday night. I immediately regretted the decision to wear black as the West Country sun bore down on my cheap, easy-iron shirt. Just to cool myself down, I ate some festival jerk chicken -- mistake number two. Amidst the chemical toilets and the guide ropes, I found a little peace in reading 'The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter' by Carson McCullers, about a deaf-mute in the Deep South.

Ziggy Marley Searching for His Duet With Michael Jackson

With Michael Jackson gone, fans are no doubt curious about the unreleased music the King of Pop left behind. At least one of those tracks features the vocals of Ziggy Marley, according to the reggae singer.

Jackson called Marley shortly after 9/11, asking him to add guest vocals to a song. Marley obliged, but never heard back, and the song, as far as he knows, was never released. "Michael called me when I was in the studio," Marley tells Spinner, "and I spoke to him and he said he really needs me to do this, and he gave me a whole thing about what it was about." Marley recorded a vocal, but never followed up. He's not sure if the song was ever completed, noting, "Somebody has to find out."

Paul McCartney Takes a Shot at Joe Jackson

Paul McCartney has spoken out about the reputed overbearing nature of Michael Jackson's father Joe Jackson, and feels it contributed to the late singer's problems. Speaking to Halifax radio station Q104 last Thursday, McCartney was asked why he overlooked Jackson's dad in an official statement, only sending his condolences to Michael's "Mother and rest of the family."

Insisting the snub was "not on purpose", the Beatles legend explained, "When I issued the statement I had a feeling things might be construed like that. The truth is I kind of know Katherine a bit better, I've met her a few times with Michael and with the family and she was a more personal friend than the dad. I haven't really met Joe, so that was why I did that."
