Potent Quotables: Weller's Rock Hero

"I wouldn't mind being Mick Jagger. He's skinny, still has hair and shags loads of birds."--Paul Weller

The former Jam frontman holds out hope for his elder years, thanks to his peer's sexagenarian, um ... strategy.

Rock Almanac: July 2, 2008

On This Date in 1992: Mick Jagger becomes a grandfather when his daughter Jade gives birth to Assisi Lola Jackson.

The Almanac Advises for July 2: "A gift that never fails to put a smile on ol' Gramps' lips is a T-shirt or mug that contains the slogan 'World's Greatest Grandpa.'"

Katy Perry Disses Mick Jagger in Favor of John Mayer

Guys looking to impress 'Kissed a Girl' sensation Katy Perry better have their A-game going. "I'm a tough cookie," Perry tells Spinner. "I don't care who you are." Just ask legendary lothario Mick Jagger.

Perry, who worked with producer Glen Ballard on her debut album met Jagger at a dinner in L.A. through Ballard's friend Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. When asked if the Rolling Stones frontman had any words of wisdom for her, she laughs. "Besides the ones when he was trying to take me home," Perry says, "and took home my other girlfriend instead cause I ain't gonna have none of that? Mick Jagger could be my dad. I don't cross 60. The age limit's probably 30."

Perhaps one of the reasons Perry doesn't get swayed by fame is due to her bloodline. "My dad used to be an acid dealer for Timothy Leary and my mom dated Jimi Hendrix for half a second," she recalls. "They have a couple of stories."

But there is one ladies man even Perry isn't immune to. "I wish John Mayer would hit on me," she says. "But that's a whole other story."

Up From the Ashes: The Ash Grove Is Reborn on a UCLA Stage

A celebration marking a half century since the opening of the seminal Los Angeles folk/blues/world club the Ash Grove brought something home: The roots of American roots music is in rootlessness.

All night long, in the first of two evening concerts marking this milestone, artists who in more recent years shaped modern American roots music -- Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal, Dave Alvin -- reminisced warmly on the stage at UCLA's Royce Hall about teenage journeys to the Melrose Ave. music spot to worship and learn at the feet of the masters: bluesmen including Lightnin' Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee and Rev. Gary Davis, such mountain music mainstays as the Stanley Brothers, plains balladeers such as Ramblin' Jack Elliott, even Eastern European folk music revived under the direction of musicologist Mike Janusz.

"The Ash Grove," noted Alvin this night in a scorching electric blues song he wrote in tribute to the old club he and his brother Phil made regular pilgrimages to from nearby Downey, "that's where I come from."

Southern Rocker Disgusted By the 'Devil'

While we doubt that anyone has ever confused Charlie Daniels with Mick Jagger, the barrel-chested southern rocker has decided to assure the world that he has absolutely no sympathy for the devil -- or, for that matter, his minions on earth. In Daniels' mind, the latter category is currently headed up by the folks responsible for 'Guitar Hero,' who've angered him by festooning the game's recently released third volume with a version of his 'Devil Went Down to Georgia' in which the Man Downstairs actually stands a chance of winning the protagonist's soul.

Daniels went onto his website to disassociate himself from the game, which he says "pervert(ed) his song" -- to which he does not own publishing rights -- and left him "disgusted with the result." Well, on the bright side, the 'Guitar Hero' folks didn't manage to sneak in a rendition of 'The South's Gonna Do It Again' in which Yankees manage to overrun Dixie and litter it with Starbucks outlets.

Rock's Hardest Partiers: No. 10

10. The Rolling Stones

Founding Stones guitarist Brian Jones became such an LSD-warped liability that the band started unplugging his guitar. He died mysteriously in his swimming pool just three weeks after Mick Jagger and Keith Richards fired him. Richards has become known far and wide as the only life form more resilient than the cockroach. Keith's gargantuan appetite for partying should have killed him 10 times in the '70s alone, and he was such an omnivorous druggie that it was easy to believe his claim that he snorted his father's cremains mixed with cocaine.

20 Bitter Band Breakups: The Mamas and the Papas

The Mamas and the Papas

The marriage of members John and Michelle Phillips was rocked by her affair with bandmate Denny Doherty; Jill Gibson, a "secret" replacement for Michelle, was briefly employed before Michelle was welcomed back. In 1968, "Mama" Cass Elliot quit when Phillips insulted her in front of Mick Jagger.

Best Opening Lyrics: No. 2

"I was born in a cross-fire hurricane"
--The Rolling Stones' 'Jumpin' Jack Flash'

We don't know if they're referring to World War II England or if this is another drug reference. Either way, it's pretty tough.

Gene Simmons Talks Trash

You don't have to be a viewer of Gene Simmons' household reality series 'Gene Simmons Family Jewels' to pick up on the fact that the Kiss mastermind is a man of, shall we say, strong opinions. While expounding on a variety of topics, from why rappers exemplify the rock & roll lifestyle better than today's rockers to how spoiled Americans are, the man born Chaim Witz in Israel has a take on subjects from pacifism to creativity that is uniquely outspoken and uniquely controversial. Simmons' overriding philosophy? As he tells Spinner, "Life is like being a stripper: Eventually you've got to take it all off." And with Simmons' baring-all attitude demonstrating that his world-renowned tongue is as sharp as it is long, we count down the fire-breathing rocker's top ten Simmons-isms, as recently shared with Spinner.

10. Gene Simmons on the death of rock stardom:
"No, there's not a single rock star left. All the rock stars and the biggest ticket sellers in the world are from days gone by. There's not a new band in the world that even comes close. Paris Hilton is a bigger rock star than anybody ... she just doesn't play guitar.

9 ... on his type of woman:

"I don't want to read a book with a girl, I'm sorry. It's not politically correct, but I really don't. I want her to be sexy, I want her to buy stiletto heels, and I want makeup and perfume."
