Nick Cave's Second Novel Coming in September

Whenever the artist Nick Cave gets mentioned in the mainstream press, the story invariably includes some version of the phrase "not to be confused with the Australian musician of the same name." That isn't necessary with the novelist Nick Cave, who is the Australian musician of the same name. Twenty years after making his fiction debut with 'And the Ass Saw the Angel,' Cave returns to bookshelves this fall with the 'The Death of Bunny Munro' (Faber & Faber).

Whereas 'And the Ass Saw the Angel' was set in the American South and earned comparisons to the likes of William Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor, 'The Death of Bunny Munro' is set in Brighton, the English coastal town where Cave resides, and has earned the following encomium from 'Trainspotting' author Irvine Welsh: "Put Cormac McCarthy, Franz Kafka and Benny Hill together in a Brighton seaside guesthouse and they might just come up with Bunny Munro."

Potent Quotables: Cave's Kids Run Free

"[My kids] are 17. I hope they're out there listening to rock 'n' roll, taking drugs and f---ing a different woman every night." --Nick Cave

While his parenting approach may raise eyebrows, we gotta give him points for his commitment to the rockstar dream.

Nick Cave Proclaims He Measures Up to Rock's Greats -- Especially Physically

It's not quite 10 a.m. when Nick Cave shows up in the lobby of L.A.'s trendy Roosevelt Hotel. While the early hour is impressive enough given that Cave headlined the Hollywood Bowl the night before, the Australian auteur has been up writing since six. It's all part of the workmanlike approach the 50-year-old Cave -- who's earned the best reviews of his storied career for this year's 'Dig, Lazarus, Dig' album -- takes to his work, traveling to an office every day to write. If it sounds surprisingly disciplined, don't worry, Nick Cave is still every bit the wild rock 'n' roll star that music could use more of.

And it makes for one hell of an entertaining and controversial interview as Cave talks about everything from how he knows he is more well-endowed than Jim Morrison to the craft of songwriting to why a sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll phase might not be the worst thing for young people.

Congratulations on the show last night.

Oh, yeah?

You said in the L.A. Times you wanted to rip the audience's heads off. Did you feel like you did that?

Well, we were told by various people that it's a notoriously difficult venue, that it's very difficult to engage with the audience because of various different reasons; the way the whole thing is set up, the way the bulk of the people are a million miles away, you're playing to people drinking and eating cheese and biscuits and all that sort of s---. So, we didn't discuss this, but I certainly felt that it was necessary to take certain steps to involve the audience. And I mean it seemed like the personnel at the Hollywood Bowl were making every attempt to disallow any real interaction between the audience and the performance.

Feist, Costello Celebrate Christmas With Colbert + More

Feist, Elvis Costello, John Legend and more are doing Christmas with Stephen Colbert on 'A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All,' an hour-long Comedy Central musical special airing on November 23.

U2's Bono and the Edge guest on 'Sugar Daddy,' a song on the upcoming Tom Jones album, '24 Hours.' The effort is Jones' first in 15 years.

Nick Cave and fellow Bad Seeds member Warren Ellis have teamed up to score the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's book 'The Road.'

The Black Crowes cancelled five tour dates due to a band member's illness: Mesa, Ariz. (9/16), Los Angeles (9/17), Santa Barbara (9/19), San Diego (9/20) and Santa Rosa, Calif. (9/21). The shows have not been rescheduled, though the band hopes to do so in 2009.

Nick Cave Books 'Dig, Lazarus Dig!!!'

Nick Cave has written a new book based on his song 'Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!' Set for release on July 8, the 40 page, four-inch hardback book chronicles the story behind the notorious Bad Seeds song.

"It is a curiosity that deals with the preparation and final glorious outcome of a project that began on the back of an envelope, a literal 'scrap' of an idea and ended up evolving into a genuine cultural icon and classic rock 'n' roll song," the eccentric Cave reveals.

Featuring notes, handwritten lyrics, photographs and a short story about the evolution of the song, the project is part of a collaborative project with British artists Sue Webster and Tim Noble.

According to Cave, the collaboration "is accompanied by an eight-foot-square light sculpture, employing over 750 light bulbs, built by Webster and Noble. This little book documents the journey of this mammoth collaboration."

'Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!' is a reworking of the Lazarus myth. Lazarus is a character in the New Testament whom Jesus raises from the dead. Cave heard the story in church as a youngster and was apparently so traumatized by it that he rewrote the myth to deal with it. 'Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!' places its character in 1970s New York City with another narrative featuring the late magician/escape artist Harry Houdini.

In 1988, Cave published his first book, 'King Ink,' which was a collection of lyrics and plays. A year later, he released his first novel, 'And the Ass Saw the Angel.'

Supergrass Get Nick Cave's Stamp of Approval

Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey admits he's just a big sap -- especially when it comes to the late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, who committed suicide Oct. 21, 2003.

"I've been listening to a lot of Elliott Smith in the last week," Goffey tells Spinner. "I really like Elliott Smith. He's one of the only artists who makes me cry. I'm a big girl, really. I read this book about Elliott Smith and he said a few weeks before he died, he came to see us play supporting Radiohead and said we were one of his favorite bands. That was really nice because we had been fans of his for a while."

Meanwhile, Goffey's out promoting Supergrass' forthcoming album, 'Diamond Hoo Ha,' which hits stores June 10. It's a name that was given the official thumbs up from dark alternative rocker Nick Cave.

"We were working with this [producer] Nick Launay. He thought it was a good title," Goffey says. "He'd just worked with Nick Cave, so he phoned Nick up and he said, 'What do you reckon?' Nick said, 'I like it.' So we stuck with it."
