Potent Quotables: Axl Goes Grim Reaper

"One of the two of us will die before a reunion." --Axl Rose

In a recent interview, the Guns N' Roses frontman squashed any remaining glimmer of hope for a reunion with former guitarist Slash.

Slash Battling Lily Tomlin Over Zoo Elephant

Slash is duking it out with actress Lily Tomlin over a proposed state-of-the-art educational habitat for endangered Asian elephants at the Los Angeles Zoo.

Tomlin wants Los Angeles City Council officials to scrap a campaign to build a new Pachyderm Forest for the Zoo's resident elephant Billy, and instead allow the creature to retire in a California sanctuary.

But Slash is a fan of the proposed state-of-the-art new educational habitat for Billy and other endangered Asian elephants. "I just want everybody to try to support this cause because it's very important," the one-time Guns N' Roses guitarist said in a statement. "Billy has been taken care of at the zoo for about 20 years. He has four keepers, who have been at his beck and call, taking care of him and providing him with optimal medical care and everything else that he needs."

Slash Speaks Out Against Prop 8

Add Slash to the growing list of musicians coming out against California's controversial Proposition 8, which recently rescinded the right for same-sex couples to marry. The guitar hero and his wife, Perla Hudson, posted a video late last week on YouTube in support of the weekend's nationwide Prop 8 protests. "I got to marry my sweetheart," Hudson says. "You should be able to marry yours, too." Meanwhile, Slash cranks out a little 'Star-Spangled Banner' in the background.

Slash Diplomatic About 'Chinese Democracy'

All the music world is abuzz about the Nov. 23 release of Guns N' Roses' forever-in-the-making album 'Chinese Democracy.' Well, save for ex-GN'R guitarist Slash.

"I don't talk about it," he tells Spinner. "I'm not on that record, I have nothing to do with it and there's really nothing else to say."

Fair enough. From the sounds of it, we could guess "the real GN'R" won't be reuniting anytime soon. But with Slash poised to perform in a concert honoring Les Paul for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a couple weeks, we still had to ask what will happen when Guns N' Roses are inevitably inducted into the Hall (they'll be eligible beginning in 2011).

Slash Tips His Hat to Les Paul

As folks decide to dress up as Slash for Halloween this year, no doubt the two most essential accoutrements for the outfit will be a top hat and a Les Paul guitar. For the real Slash, the top hat may have come and gone but the Les Paul will never change. "I've picked up a couple stragglers over the years leading up to when I was in Guns N' Roses," Slash tells Spinner. "But I always kept gravitating to the Les Paul. If I could get one and hold onto it for any length of time, I was good."

Eventually Slash would become just as much a poster child for that Gibson-made guitar brand as his hero Jimmy Page. In fact, the guitar company has long been manufacturing Slash's own signature line of the guitar. Of course, none of it would've happened had it not been for Les Paul himself, the 93-year-old guitar wizard who not only invented the solid body electric guitar, but also much of the technology still used to record it: multi-track recording, tape-delay, reverb, etc.

Slash Working on Solo Album, Not Waiting on Velvet Revolver

While media and fans keep speculating on a new singer for Velvet Revolver, Slash isn't waiting around, but rather, keeping busy with solo project. "I'm working on it pretty aggressively right now while I have the time cause as soon as Velvet finds its singer, then it's going to be off the races with that," he tells Spinner. "I'm using this little period to be able to do as much on my solo record as possible. I'm not sure exactly when it will come out, but hopefully it will come out before the Velvet record."

"It'll be my first solo record," he" continues. All the other ones were just me putting other bands together and going out and just jamming. This will actually be a little bit more personal."

Slash was in a bit of a reflective mood when he spoke to Spinner as it was just after he was honored for his sobriety at a MusiCares event in L.A. There, Slash shared the stage with Steven Tyler, who presented him his award, fellow honoree Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick's Robin Zander and Camp Freddy. "When I was 14 years old, I was going to Cheap Trick, Aerosmith and Alice Cooper gigs," he says. "And if you told me, 'In the future, you're going to be jamming with Steven Tyler, Robin Zander and Alice Cooper,' I never would've believed it. That would've been an premise."
