Rock Almanac: November 20, 2008

On This Date in 1973: After Keith Moon passes out at his drum kit during a San Francisco performance by the Who, Pete Townshend appeals to the audience for a drummer to take Moon's place onstage. Scot Halpin, a 19-year-old fan from Iowa, stands in to finish the set.

The Almanac Advises for November 20: "Nothing comes closer to the actual experience of playing alongside your favorite rockers than interactive video games such as Rock Band."

Foos, Pearl Jam Lead Rocking Tribute to the Who

There were no gold watches or long speeches as the Who were feted by VH1 in Los Angeles. Fittingly for a band that, according to Jack Black, were the greatest ever "because they were the first to rock hard," the two-hour-plus tribute at UCLA featured a whole lot of loud rock, along with some stirring video tributes by the likes of Sting, Slash, Dave Navarro and more. Starting with the Foo Fighters, who delivered a scorching 'Young Man Blues,' then turned the lead vocals over to Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes for 'Bargain,' the show delivered highlight after highlight.

The Foos were then followed by the Flaming Lips. Introduced by actor Rainn Wilson, who was dressed as Elton John's character in the film version of the classic Who album 'Tommy,' the Lips began their rocking 'Tommy' medley with Wayne Coyne crowd-surfing in their now trademark plastic ball. Incubus performed 'I Can See for Miles' and 'I Can't Explain.' The former song was an apt selection for the band, as guitarist Mike Einziger told Spinner it was the first Who song he ever heard. "This sounds really funny, but I heard it on one of those greatest hits of the golden era of rock or something infomercial," he said.

Following an entertaining Tenacious D rendition of 'Squeeze Box' that ended with Black's pants down around his ankles, the de facto headliner of the first half of the night, Pearl Jam, rocked the crowd with a devastatingly powerful interpretation of 'Love Reign O'er Me' and an equally raucous 'The Real Me.'

Potent Quotables: Penn Pushes Buttons

"We all know we're here tonight 'cause the Who never did sell out, unlike certain music channels." --Sean Penn

Never one to miss an opportunity to be controversial, the actor took a jab at VH1 during the channel's own ceremony honoring the Who.

Rock Almanac: June 11, 2008

On This Date in 1966: Following Pete Townshend's injury in a minor accident, European radio stations mistakenly announce the death of Who frontman Roger Daltrey.

The Almanac Advises for June 11: "Despite the notion behind gloomy, romanticized statements such as 'Hope I die before I get old,' today's youth are often oblivious of their own mortality and behave as if they will be forever young."

Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters Pay Tribute to the Who

Pearl Jam, the Foo Fighters and the Flaming Lips will each perform at the forthcoming VH1 Rock Honors tribute to the Who. The event, which will also boast a performance by surviving Who members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, will be held July 12 at Los Angeles ' Pauley Pavilion. The show will air July 17.

Tickets for the gig will go on sale Friday, June 6 to members of the Who's 'Wholigans' fan club. Should any remain, they can be had by the general public on June 8. Proceeds will benefit such charities as the Teenage Cancer Trust, which the Who have long supported, VH1's Save the Music Foundation, the Double O Charity and VH1 Classic Rock Autism.

Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder has been an outspoken fan of the Who for much of his career, going so far as to once say, "I should be sending Pete Townshend cards for Father's Day." Pearl Jam covered the Who's 1973 classic 'Love Reign O'er Me' for the 2007 Adam Sandler film, appropriately titled 'Reign Over Me.'

Rollercoaster Inspired by Fiery Balloon

If you're lining up to experience the Hard Rock Park's new 15-story, six-loop rollercoaster, Led Zeppelin: The Ride, you may not care to be reminded about how the band got its name. As the story goes, Led Zeppelin was tagged when the Who's Keith Moon and John Entwistle joked that a proposed supergroup featuring guitarist Jimmy Page would go down "like a lead zeppelin."

A fiery crash from a great height: Interesting mental image for a colossal rollercoaster.

But then it wouldn't be the Hard Rock without a bit of the old devil-may-care attitude, especially if you can print it on a T-shirt. Led Zeppelin: The Ride is just one of the many attractions at the Hard Rock's new theme park, which is set to open next week. Touted as a family-friendly destination in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the place will feature such fun-for-all-ages attractions as the Magic Mushroom Garden, Slippery When Wet and the Whammy Bar. (Nothing like a tall cold one after explaining to the kids what a magic mushroom does to your sanity.)

One South Carolina woman just paid $1829 for the privilege of seating her family in the first two rows of the Led Zeppelin ride on its inaugural run on Tuesday, when the $400 million park opens to the public. The park auctioned fifteen tickets for the kickoff.

With 64 speakers installed for each 32-passenger train, the ride is accompanied by a top-volume recording of Zep's 'Whole Lotta Love.' By one calculation, the auction winner is paying four dollars per second. Like the transaction described in the song, she deserves every inch.
